FIRSTGOV FOR WORKERS

firstgov.jpgClient: U.S. Department of Labor

Summary Objective: One of the goals of the administration’s e-government policy is to make the government and its services more readily available to the American people through the use of the internet. The administration intends to provide them with a website that is a single point of access for links to all agencies, departments and programs with material relevant to them.  The site needs to be easy to navigate and well-organized and in this case with a focus on items that are important to workers.

Solution: FirstGov for Workers (originally called Access America for Workers). Working with representatives from the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, Defense, Agriculture, Health & Human Services and Transportation, XPAND debuted the portal site www.workers.gov in 2000. XPAND contributed to the content development of links in the categories of Jobs, Transportation & Housing, Recreation & Travel, Learning, Money Management, Citizenship, Family & Health and Rights & Protections. The web design group created the initial look of the website. XPAND created an extensive administration tool that keeps statistics, maintains the large database of link information for editing, enables online website updates and maintains the database of emails sent to the site for response. XPAND is responsible for meeting compliance requirements for the Section 508 standards of accessibility applicable to government websites. FirstGov for Workers received the Vice President's Hammer award in 2000 and the Golden Web Award for 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
